Setting Out Axes, Columns and Levels on Site

A small setting-out error can put a column in the wrong place and lead to demolition and rework. We transfer axes and levels from approved drawings to site by instrument and leave reference points the contractor can return to throughout the work.

When do you need it?

  • Before excavation and blinding concrete
  • When setting out columns, footings and walls
  • When transferring levels between floors
  • When building roads and networks along set routes

What does the work include?

  • Review of drawings and dimensions before the site visit
  • Creating or checking control points and benchmarks
  • Setting out axes and elements by coordinates
  • Checking the marks before the next activity starts

What do you receive?

  • Clear axes and marks on the ground
  • Fixed, recorded reference points
  • Table of setting-out coordinates and levels
  • Written notes on any conflict in the drawings

What to send for a quote

  • Axis and foundation drawings, in DWG if possible
  • Site location and construction stage
  • Existing benchmarks or control points
  • The date you need the work

How the work runs

  1. We review the approved drawings and extract coordinates for the elements to set out.
  2. We check the control points and benchmarks before starting.
  3. We set out the axes and elements, with clear marks and offset points.
  4. We check the marks with the contractor or consultant before excavation or pouring.

FAQ

Are tape and string enough to set out axes?

They may do for small jobs, but an instrument limits accumulated error, especially over long distances, uneven ground or irregular shapes.

Who provides the drawings?

The owner or consultant provides approved drawings. We check the main dimensions and flag any conflict before setting out.

What if the marks move during the work?

We leave reference points outside the excavation area, so marks can be re-established from them instead of starting over.
