What method does it use?
Each cell uses the mean of its four corners. Its difference from the design level is multiplied by the cell area, and the whole cell counts as cut or fill according to that mean.
Can I use the result for payment?
No, it is an early estimate. Cells containing both cut and fill are less accurate, and bulking or settlement is not included. Payment needs field observations and an agreed method.
How can I improve the estimate?
Use smaller cells where the ground changes quickly, and use levels observed on site instead of general maps.
