3D Laser Scanning
Advanced surveying technology creating precise 3D models. El-Eman Office provides modern surveying services across Egypt.
How does laser scanning work on site?
In 3D laser scanning, the scanner is set up on a tripod in a position that covers as many surfaces as possible, then rotates and emits laser pulses, measuring their return time or phase shift to compute distance accurately. Each setup produces millions of points with three coordinates. To cover a whole building or facility, multiple setups are made and later merged into a single point cloud using shared reference targets or surface matching, and they can be tied to control points to unify the reference.
Processing stages and producing the model
- Register the scan setups to each other and estimate the residual error.
- Clean the cloud of noise and unwanted points such as people and cars.
- Extract sections, elevations and plans by measuring from the cloud.
- Build a 3D model or a BIM model, depending on the level of detail required.
- Check the model by comparing it with reference measurements.
Processing needs powerful computers and specialised software and is often longer than the field scanning, so do not overlook it when estimating the project duration.
When is laser scanning the best choice?
Laser scanning suits buildings with complex details such as ornament and heritage facades, industrial plants crowded with pipework, tunnels and caves, and deformation monitoring, where point clouds from different times are compared. Simple open plots are usually adequately served by a total station or GNSS, with no need for the extra cost and time.
The quality of the result depends on factors such as shiny or transparent surfaces that reflect the laser irregularly, the movement of people and vehicles, weather conditions such as rain and dust, and whether enough setups give coverage without shadowed areas. Agree in advance on the level of detail and accuracy required and the file formats to be delivered.
Planning a laser scanning job and requesting a quote
To get a useful result, state the purpose first: are you after drawings for renovation, a BIM model or a record of existing conditions? Then define the site scope precisely, and whether the scan covers facades only, the interior as well, or the roofs. The site needs arrangements such as reducing movement as far as possible, providing access to roofs and basements, and agreeing suitable times. It is best if the quote states the accuracy level, point density and delivery formats, such as file sizes and compatible software, since these details affect time, cost and use.
Frequently asked questions
Does laser scanning replace traditional surveying?
No, it complements it. Control points and setting out remain the job of conventional instruments, while laser scanning provides density and detail.
Can a point cloud be used directly for design?
It usually needs converting into drawings or a simplified model, because the cloud alone is huge and hard to work with in ordinary drawing software.
How do I verify the accuracy of the results?
By comparing independently measured dimensions with the values extracted from the model, and by checking the scan registration report.
