Land Area Calculation

Various methods exist from tape measurement to Total Station and GPS. El-Eman Office provides accurate land area measurement services across Egypt.

Calculating area from coordinates, step by step

Accurate land area calculation for an irregular plot relies on treating it as a polygon whose vertex coordinates (X, Y) are known. The points are listed in sequence around the boundary, then the cross-multiplication (shoelace) formula is applied: multiply each point's X by the next point's Y, subtract the product of each point's Y and the next X, add up the results, divide by two and take the absolute value. The polygon must be closed by returning to the first point.

This method only gives a correct result if the coordinates are accurate and the order is right with no crossing sides, so the polygon should be plotted to check its shape.

Sources of error in area measurement

  • Measuring lengths along a slope without converting them to horizontal distances.
  • Using a sagging or crooked tape between points.
  • Choosing unstable corners or marks that may have moved.
  • Rounding numbers too early during calculation.
  • Mixing units such as the metre, the qasaba, the feddan and the qirat.
  • Ignoring curved parts of the boundary instead of representing them with enough points.

Units, conversion and checking the result

Area is normally computed in square metres and then converted into the local units used in transactions, following the accepted conventions. Recording the area in both units in the report avoids confusion. Verify with a second method, such as dividing the shape into triangles or comparing with drawing software, to catch any data entry mistake.

The final number is not everything. The report should also state the measurement method, the instruments and the reference used, so the measurement can be repeated in case of a dispute.

Choosing the right method for your case

There is no single best method for every plot. The choice depends on size, purpose and the accuracy needed. A small regular residential plot may be fine with a total station, or a tape with angle checks, while large open land suits GNSS receivers. Drones are useful for large or rugged land but need ground control points to fix their accuracy. If the purpose is an official transaction or a boundary dispute, use a documented field measurement that can be re-verified.

It helps to define the purpose first: buying, selling, dividing or licensing? This decides the deliverables, whether only an area figure, a sketch with coordinates or a detailed map with levels, and prevents repeating the survey later.

Frequently asked questions

Is the area taken from an aerial map accepted officially?

It is only an estimate and is useful for preliminary studies. Official transactions require an approved field measurement.

Why might the contract area differ from the measured area?

It may be due to an old estimate in the contract, a change in the actual boundaries, or a different measurement method. The difference is recorded and its reason explained.

Does the slope of the land affect its area?

Area is normally calculated on the horizontal projection of the land, so sloping lengths must be converted to horizontal ones before calculating.
