Glass & Mirrors
Types and prices for glass and mirror works. El-Eman Office provides glass installation.
Choosing glass thickness by size and use
In glass and mirror work, no single thickness suits every location. The larger the pane and the more it is exposed to wind or impact, the thicker, or the more toughened or laminated, it needs to be. Strength also depends on the fixing: a pane held on four sides takes more than one held on two, and glass for tall facades is subject to engineering calculations that set its thickness and fixing method.
- Doors, partitions and balustrades need toughened or laminated glass for safety.
- Overhead glazing and skylights need laminated glass so fragments do not fall if it breaks.
- Sun-facing facades benefit from reflective or double glazing to reduce heat.
Fixing systems and execution details
Glass can be excellent and still break because of poor fixing. Important points include:
- Accurate measurement: measure the opening after plastering or frames are finished, and leave small gaps around the pane for expansion.
- No direct contact with metal or concrete: use suitable gaskets or rubber packers that absorb vibration.
- Cutting and toughening before installation: toughened glass cannot be cut or drilled afterwards, so dimensions and holes are fixed beforehand.
- Weatherproof sealing: suitable silicone is used on facades and in bathrooms to stop water getting in.
- Water drainage: external frames need paths for collected water to escape.
Installing and caring for mirrors
Mirrors are affected by moisture, especially in bathrooms, where the silvering can corrode at the edges. It is advisable to use mirrors with a good protective backing, a polished edge finish, and to seal the edges with a suitable material. When fitting a large mirror on a wall, the surface must be flat and dry, because any curvature distorts the reflection. Use an adhesive made for mirrors that does not react with the backing. Mirrors in gyms and shops need safety panes, or adhesive film that stops fragments scattering if they break.
Frequently asked questions
Why does toughened glass sometimes shatter suddenly?
Causes include fixing pressure on the edge of the pane, contact with metal, or tiny impurities in the glass. Better installation details and separators between the glass and the frame help.
What is the difference between toughened and laminated glass?
Toughened glass breaks into small, blunt pieces, while laminated glass has two layers with a plastic interlayer that holds the pieces together. Laminated is preferred where falling glass must be prevented, such as in roofs.
How do I clean mirrors and glass without damaging them?
Use a mild non-abrasive cleaner and a soft cloth, and avoid letting liquid run behind mirrors at the edges.
