Marble versus granite in use

When planning marble and granite works, know that the two stones behave differently. Granite is harder, less porous and better at resisting scratches, heat and weather, so it is used for outdoor floors, kitchens and facades. Marble is softer and finer in appearance but more sensitive to acids such as lemon, vinegar and strong cleaners, and its shine is quickly affected.

  • High-traffic floors: granite, or marble with a finish that is not highly polished.
  • Kitchen worktops: granite is preferred for heat and stain resistance.
  • Bathrooms: a non-slip finish and protection against moisture.

Correct installation steps

Quality starts with the substrate. The concrete or screed under the tiles must be level, firm and free of moisture. The marble is laid out on the floor before fixing, to choose the arrangement of veining and colours so the floor looks harmonious. Thin, regular joints are left and filled with a material matching the stone colour.

  1. Check the floor level and treat any waviness.
  2. Arrange pieces by veining and colour before fixing.
  3. Spread mortar evenly and make sure no voids remain under each piece.
  4. Adjust level with a spirit level, leaving no steps between neighbouring pieces.
  5. Polish and protect after the joints have filled and dried.

Care and recurring problems

Clean daily with a neutral cleaner and a soft cloth, and avoid acidic cleaners on marble. A protective coating reduces liquid penetration. Most complaints come from water stains rising from the floor, or from pieces cracking when voids exist beneath them or the base moves.

  • Ask the supplier for real samples, not photos only, since natural marble colours vary.
  • Order an extra allowance for waste, cutting and repairing breakage.
  • Do not accept installation before adjacent wet works have dried.

Economical planning of quantities and supply

Marble and granite vary in quality from slab to slab, so quantities should be set precisely before ordering. Draw the floor or staircase on paper and define each piece and cutting location. This reduces waste and keeps the veining continuous. For stairs and counters, cut pieces from a single slab where possible for consistent colour.

  • Order pieces from the same batch to avoid shade differences.
  • Allow enough time for cutting and fabrication before installation.
  • Reserve safe storage for slabs, away from impact and moisture.

Frequently asked questions

Why do stains appear on marble after installation?

They may come from rising damp, unsuitable mortar or liquids absorbed by the pores. Treatment starts with identifying the cause, drying the surface, then cleaning or re-polishing it.

Is granite suitable for bathroom floors?

Yes, with a rough or matte finish that reduces slipping, together with good waterproofing and correct falls toward the drain.

How do I know the pieces are suitable before installing?

Check consistent thickness and dimensions, absence of cracks and defects, and colour match with the approved sample. Inspect them after laying them out and before fixing.
