Fiberglass

Applications and prices for fiberglass. El-Eman Office provides fiberglass installation.

Fabrication methods and their effect on quality

Fiberglass work is carried out in different ways depending on the shape and strength needed. The best known is hand lay-up, where layers of fibre are placed in a mould and saturated with resin, which suits complex shapes and small quantities. Mechanical methods such as spray-up or filament winding give more uniform results in large-scale production, tanks and pipes.

  • The quality of the mould shows directly in the smoothness of the surface.
  • The outer gel coat gives the colour and protects against weather.
  • The number and thickness of layers determine strength and should not be reduced to cut the price.
  • Full curing needs time and suitable conditions before installation.

Choosing the resin and the fibre type

Fiberglass is not a single material, because the resin used varies with the purpose. There are types for general use, chemical-resistant types for industrial pipes and tanks, and types intended for drinking water that must comply with health requirements. Fibres also differ between chopped mat and woven fabrics, each with its own strength and flexibility. If you order a drinking water tank, for example, make sure the materials are suitable, the inner surface is smooth and the tank blocks light to prevent algae growth.

Installation and defects to watch for

A lightweight product is easy to transport and install, but it needs care in fixing and support so it does not distort. When inspecting a product before accepting it, check the following:

  • The surface is free from obvious air bubbles or dry areas where the fibres were not saturated.
  • Thickness is even at edges and corners, where weak points are common.
  • Joints between parts are well made and reinforced with extra layers.
  • Colour is consistent and the gel coat has no fine cracks.
  • Suitable supports or bases are provided to spread the load.

It is advisable to protect the product from long sun exposure with a suitable coating or protective paint, because ultraviolet light can weaken the surface and change its colour over the years.

Frequently asked questions

Can fiberglass be repaired?

Yes. Cracks and holes are repaired with new layers of fibre and resin after preparing the area, then refinished with paint. This is one reason it is so common for tanks and basins.

Is it safe for storing drinking water?

It is suitable if materials approved for contact with drinking water and a smooth inner layer are used, and the tank must be cleaned regularly.

How do I recognise good fiberglass?

Look for even thickness, a smooth surface, uniform hardness, a solid sound when tapped, and no bubbles or dry spots. It also helps to review the manufacturer's specifications and method of production.
