Staircase Construction

Types, code requirements, and costs. El-Eman Office builds stairs with precise level control.

The right geometry for climbing

A staircase's comfort comes not from how it looks but from the regularity of its steps and the proportion of their dimensions. There is a well-known relationship between the height of the riser and the depth of the tread, and if either is much too large the stair becomes tiring or dangerous. The most important practical rule is that all risers in a flight are equal in height, since a small difference between one step and another causes many trips, because the body gets used to a regular rhythm. In designing and building stairs, therefore, the total height between the two finished floors should be calculated precisely and divided by the number of steps, taking into account the thickness of the finish to be added later.

Common construction mistakes

  • Calculating steps on raw concrete without allowing for tile or marble thickness, so the first and last steps differ from the rest.
  • Changing the floor level after the stair has been cast.
  • Failing to give a slight fall to the outer tread to shed water on exposed stairs.
  • Making the landing narrower than needed, which hinders moving furniture and evacuation.
  • Neglecting headroom where people pass under the stair or beams.

The practical solution is to mark the finished floor heights on the columns by level before the formwork is erected, mark the position of each step, and check the dimensions with a level before casting. After finishing, the riser heights are checked once more.

Safety and ease of use

Besides dimensions, a safe finish matters. Smooth surfaces need non-slip edges, especially on external or wet stairs. Balustrades must be firm and able to carry horizontal loads, with spacing that does not let children pass between the bars. Lighting should be placed so it does not create shadows that hide the edges of steps, and emergency lighting helps in a power cut. In public buildings, coloured nosings are used to make the steps clear for the elderly.

  1. Establish the total height between finished floors by level.
  2. Divide the height by a whole number of steps that gives comfortable proportions.
  3. Adjust the calculations to include finish thickness on the first and last step.
  4. Check the dimensions before casting and after finishing.

Choosing a stair type by space and use

The choice depends on the available space, the number of users and the type of building. In general residential buildings a straight stair or one with a landing is preferred for comfort and ease of moving furniture. In villas the stair may be a decorative feature of the entrance. In industrial buildings and warehouses a steel stair is useful for quick installation. Emergency stairs have their own requirements for fire resistance and easy evacuation. A stair should not be chosen only for its looks at the expense of safety and comfort, especially in homes with children or elderly people.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stair with uneven steps be repaired?

Sometimes the finish can be adjusted with a levelling layer, but large differences need partial demolition, so prevention before casting is better.

What suits small spaces best?

Spiral or ladder-type stairs save space, but they are less comfortable and harder for moving items, so they suit limited use.

Does a steel stair need special calculations?

Yes. It needs calculation of tread capacity, vibration and fixing into concrete, plus rust protection, and it is best approved by a structural engineer.
